Features

“Light, more light! "- this is the motto of the rooms decorated in the loft style. Indeed, huge open spaces under high arches of beam ceilings require skillful lighting, which is often only possible for an experienced designer to create.

The Loft style itself was born back in the 20s of the last century. The crisis hit American enterprises, forcing them to hastily curtail production and move it to the suburbs, and sell empty industrial buildings for nothing. Bohemia immediately began to move to non-residential buildings in Manhattan, seeing the charm of such premises. They didn’t rack their brains over the arrangement: they dragged old furniture, and the lighting devices partially left which ones already existed.

The relaxed free spirit was to the taste of many, and the distinctive features of the style began to copy. All this resulted in a separate style, named after the premises in which it originated.

Time passed, and the concept remained the same, but now the Loft chandeliers are made not from improvised materials, but from exclusive designer ones, and they are sometimes indecently expensive. However, a large selection of various options represented by the style as a typical design allows you to choose models for almost any wallet.

The loft imposes rather strict restrictions on the choice of material from which the chandeliers are made, on the colors and even on the intensity of the glow of the bulbs. In addition, there are certain rules that indicate placing different types of chandeliers at different heights. All this is done with one single goal - to divide the space as rationally as possible, highlighting each of the zones in a special way. “Functionality is above all,” says one of the rules of style.

For each room a specific type of chandelier is selected. Initially, loft rooms did not have partitions and walls, the whole room was an apartment, so each of the functional areas was highlighted in its own way and somehow with its own device. This point is also worth considering when choosing a chandelier.

For the loft rooms, various chandeliers are selected, ordinary and not very. One of the most famous is the so-called spider - a heavy round design with bulbs in a circle located on a frame resembling spider legs. At present, variations have also appeared, for example, a spider on flexible tabs-cords, picked up by means of a special holder device that is fixed under the ceiling. If you hang bulbs on cords without a holder device, you will get another typical option for a loft.

Such "bouquets" of their lamps can be called a chandelier only with a stretch, but they perform the same functional role and cope with it perfectly.

Round Gothic candelabra chandeliers are popular design decisions. Candles have long been replaced by electrical counterparts that mimic their shape and structure, but such majestic models are attached with coarse chains, as in old times.

Edison bulbs, which differ from Ilyich’s models in the structure of incandescent elements, are used in the loft style along with others. They do not need a floor lamp, since a dim, evenly burning light is soft in itself and does not need additional scattering. If you hang a simple cartridge on the cord and turn on the Edison bulb, you get another loft “chandelier”. It is worth remembering that this type of lighting "eats" a lot of electrical energy, be prepared to spend it properly.

Track suspensions are an aluminum tire on which several fixtures are placed. The tire is the most mobile and versatile version of all the above, it can be hung at any height and supplemented with different types of light bulbs that fit well with each other. Ordinary Soviet plafonds, like in films about the war, fit well into the loft, especially if they retained the remains of "native" paint.

Rusty models can be repainted, especially if you do not want to breed dirt, but it is better to try to find an option in good condition and treat it with modern means that prevent metal corrosion.

Materials

It’s most common to see metal loft chandeliers. They are different in their design: from pipes, from flexible parts, in the form of searchlights, similar to any elements of plumbing, tire, simple Gothic, in the form of a wheel, with an oval ceiling - the list goes on and on. The real find is a combination of various forms of metal shades located at the same height.

High-quality metal products from cast iron, stainless steel, aluminum are selected. Bronze models usually do not fit the style, as well as the usual brass or gilded ones.

Glass in all sorts of manifestations is another extreme of style.

Rich crystal chandeliers or geometric broken structures are found everywhere, depending on the height of the ceiling, certain varieties are used.

In addition to standard glass chandeliers, crystal shaped decanters for cognac or empty whiskey bottles with saved labels on them are used as shades. Such chandeliers seem to declare an emphasized simple attitude to life, the absence of any attachments, and also show that, as they say, everything will fit in the household.

Plastic chandeliers are a budget option, however, there are some nuances here. Plastic is stylized as a metal, stained with various powder paints. One of the most common options is to paint the plastic lampshade from the inside with a matte silver paint that imitates aluminum, and an unpretentious color, for example, gray or khaki, is chosen for the outside. To include such a design in the interior, you need to try, since neither gray nor hacks are typical for a loft.

Wood models are not used and are not found. Wooden structures for the loft are not modern enough and too sophisticated. In this style, everything breathes simplicity and functionality, while wood is a pretension to a certain elevation and classical correctness.

Dimensions

Loft style loves extremes. Large or small chandeliers, it does not matter, the main thing is not medium.

In most cases, still large enough single options or a large group of small ones are chosen. The chandelier should look massive regardless of the size of its components. It should be borne in mind that the smaller the details of the chandelier, the brighter the light that it emits. For example, a single light bulb in a lampshade should burn heat, even slightly dim, while a “bouquet” of lightbulbs should emit so much light that it was impossible to look at them.

The size of the chandelier also depends on the room in which it is installed. Somewhere it is preferable to install a narrow long track structure, and somewhere to hang a "spider" of large diameter.

Colors

The choice of color scheme depends on the type of chandelier. Briefly, the theme of coloring has already been discussed in the section on materials, Now it's time to dwell on it in more detail:

  • In the vast majority of cases, loft chandeliers are made white, black or transparent. The first pair of options relates to metal structures, and the last to glass. Modern plastic models (especially spider models) can also be bright: red, neon yellow, aquamarine, acid green.
  • White a chandelier is chosen in cases where it is not planned to make a catchy accent. It also happens that white wires are designed to “dissolve” in space, allowing transparent shades with unusual bulbs to soar in the air without support.

  • Black options more justified, since it was the black models that were originally in the style. Black metal constructs are the constant classic of a loft. Neutral color allows you to choose an unusual shape of the structure or complement it with interesting details. For example, one example is a cage chandelier, inside which there is another chandelier, but made of glass, complemented by candelabra with electric candle lights.
  • Metallic models should not be like chandeliers in the truest sense of the word. It’s best when strange details are coated with metal paint: inverted wine glasses as shades or perforated spheres.

  • The richer the better. Bright models are suitable for designing a bright loft. Bathing in a huge amount of light, they will create the necessary contrast, and even such a chandelier turned off will serve its purpose, accurately correcting and "highlighting" the surrounding elements.

Choosing a color model, you need to make sure that the shades are as bright as possible, so to speak, striking.

  • Clear glass chandeliers - A separate topic for discussion. Most often there are pompous models with many small details, more appropriate for the theater than for the industrial premises. In combination with untreated walls and accentuated technological details, clear glass looks luxurious.

Glass parts are usually not painted, but in some cases the bulbs for the “spider” chandelier are varnished, which shimmers with all the colors of the rainbow, remaining transparent. This option is more appropriate for mixed styles than for a pure loft, however, it also has the right to exist.

For different rooms

Consider the good location options:

  • In the kitchen Use of aluminum lampshades or track tires over the table is welcome. In general, a chandelier for a kitchen in a loft is the best choice, since it does not occupy floor space, leaving more room for maneuvers. Glass models will not fit here, the emphasized neglect of pretentiousness for the kitchen is taboo.

  • For the bedroom you should choose a single model on a flexible but durable cord. It is possible to hang on a similar chandelier on each side of the bed above the bedside tables, placing the suspensions almost close to the wall. Also a good choice would be to use several small bright spotlights right above the head of the bed. In the bedroom, the chandelier should not be located in the middle of the room, as usual, but in the sleeping area.

  • For the living room You can choose from a fairly large lineup. This includes both small spotlights and spider chandeliers or classic crystal baroque options. The use of a metallized large sphere descending to the middle of the distance between the floor and the ceiling is also not forbidden. The choice of a single option is carried out after analysis of all the essential factors, such as natural lighting, overall color content, the prevalence of a particular material, the height of the ceilings and the total area of the room.

  • If you dare to issue nursery in the loft style, it’s definitely worth it to choose a flexible “spider” design made of bright plastic. The chandelier needs to be mounted under the very ceiling so that the child cannot reach it and receive an electric shock. An interesting choice will be the installation of busbar constructions, supplemented by searchlights, or the choice in favor of a large and bright plastic sphere. By choosing a sphere with perforations that create the illusion of a night sky, you will make your child happy and make the lighting more interesting.

Regardless of the room, it is worth remembering that the loft style does not accept gentle romantic vintage colorings and designs. Do not experiment, especially if the chandelier is expensive.

Incorrectly choosing a ceiling lighting fixture, you risk spoiling the whole look of the room.

LOFT: refinement in laconicism

How to choose?

It should be remembered that wooden chandeliers should not be present in the interior, because a material such as wood adds sophistication and luxury, which completely contradicts the concept of the “loft” style.

Give preference to suspensions, such chandeliers are widely used to illuminate the kitchen.Large chandeliers, such as a spider chandelier, will be very appropriate in the living room or in the dining room, impressing guests and focusing their attention on the lighting and ceiling.

It should also be remembered that chandeliers in this style should not contain exquisite decor elements, excessive pomposity and a claim to luxury. They should harmoniously fit into the surrounding space, which accepts "sloppiness", roughness, a certain incompleteness, not devoid of, nevertheless, creative zest and a kind of chic.

If you still decide to equip your house in the "loft" style or to furnish only a few rooms in this direction, then you should adhere to some recommendations made by experienced designers who have been working in this area for several years.

So, here are some useful tips from experts:

  1. Remember that chandeliers in this style are not so much intended for a decorative role, but as a functional element that can give maximum light to your space,
  2. Highlighting the interior is recommended at once in several levels. The ideal combination would be to install a chandelier on the ceiling, walls, the presence of floor lamps, since together they will give the maximum illumination of the room, which is required for this style,
  3. The size of the chandelier should correspond to the interior, harmoniously fitting into it, and not get lost in space. Therefore, give preference to large large chandeliers,
  4. If you opted for small chandeliers, remember that there should be many in one place in order to maintain the unity of style and give maximum lighting,
  5. The best light source will be one that will cause associations with industrial industry.

Aluminum chandeliers - this is just the kind that will most advantageously look in the interior under the influence of this style, since such lamps most of all lead to the association of the factory premises, skillfully faked for housing. Aluminum chandeliers will look incredibly organic in any room in your home. In addition, they are very unusual, because a material such as aluminum, by itself, is something extraordinary for a chandelier, non-standard for an interior element.

An ideal option for lighting in the interior under the influence of the Loft spirit is the LED model of lamps, which give the impression that you are at the exhibition of a famous artist or in his workshop. Such lamps are largely simple, although not without a distinctive taste, which gives the interior even more modernity in the spirit of industrialism.

Remember that this style is especially sensitive to the choice of lighting, as it originated during the boom in factory housing, which was brightly lit by large windows. There are enough stylish lamps on the market that look attractive for such a modern interior.

A wide selection of chandeliers and the information received will not let you get confused when decorating your rooms.

All chandeliers in this direction, whether they be floor, hanging, wall or spot, are remarkable for the fact that they are already an independent art object, regardless of whether they are at your home or hanging in a store.

Take a closer look. A variety of fixtures amazes the imagination, captivating it with its intricate shapes or geometric shapes. Not a single loft-style chandelier will leave you indifferent even if it does not fit into the framework of ordinary interiors that we are so accustomed to.

You will not pass by such a chandelier, even if you do not like it, because a “loft” is an explosion, it is a flight beyond the boundaries of a standard interior, it is a huge step from the classical canons of decorating your premises.

Chandeliers in the Loft style must meet the following requirements, since this direction dictates its own standards, far from standard.

However, these standards should be taken into account if you still want to equip your room in the "loft" style:

  1. Minimum decor on lamps,
  2. Black or white, less often neon or bright acid colors,
  3. Very bright illumination, the brighter - the better,
  4. Big sizes,
  5. Small chandeliers are permissible only if there will be many at once in one place,
  6. No jewelry, crystal pendants,
  7. The material from which the chandelier is made should resemble, for example, plumbing elements, cords, etc. that will inspire thoughts about the factory premises.

Leading designers in the field of interior design talk about such a bright lighting that it would be impossible to look at the chandelier (chandeliers, if it is somewhat small) while it is on. Indeed, light in such an interior plays a key, almost leading role, not inferior even to the design of the walls themselves, which, incidentally, is also important.
