Linoleum has a large number of advantages, but it still has certain disadvantages:

- the installation of heavy furniture on the surface of linoleum leads to the formation of dents on it.
However, if we compare the advantages and disadvantages of this material, it is obvious that it has much more advantages.
Varieties of linoleum for laying on plywood
Among the main types of linoleum, there are:
1. A household version of linoleum - for its manufacture, a foamed polyester base is used, the strip of such linoleum in thickness is from one to four millimeters. However, this type of linoleum has a complex structure. Among its advantages, it is worth highlighting:
- variety of color schemes,
- high level of softness
- moisture resistance
- easy styling
- affordable cost.
However, if this type of linoleum lends itself to a high operational load, then its service life is about three years. This material is unstable to a large weight, therefore, due to its softness, it is prone to dents. This version of linoleum is recommended for use in residential premises.
2. Commercial version of linoleum - is characterized by high wear resistance and durability. Great for installation in offices or salons, as it implies the application of any kind of emblems or drawings on it. There are two options for such linoleum:
- homogeneous linoleum,
- heterogeneous linoleum.
The first option differs in thickness from one and a half to three millimeters. A monophonic pattern is applied on it, it contains components in the form of limestone, talc and kaolin. A special coating of polyurethane is applied to the surface, protecting it from mechanical and external influences. Once every half a year, this coating needs to be sanded.
The second version of linoleum is heterogeneous, it is highly versatile. It has a multilayer structure, it is based on the use of fiberglass. To impregnate the front of the linoleum, a PVC paste is used, then a pattern is applied to the linoleum, which is fixed with another layer of polyvinyl chloride. On the inner side of linoleum, a substrate is made of fabric, jute or foamed polyvinyl chloride. This linoleum does not need special care and has a long service life.
3. Semi-commercial type linoleum - similar to the household linoleum type, however, it has a higher protective layer thickness, about 0.6 mm. The scope of its application is associated with public and passage rooms.
In relation to the type of materials used in the production of linoleum, it is divided into:
- synthetic linoleum,
- natural linoleum.
The first option is characterized by ease of maintenance, moisture resistance, good sound insulation characteristics. However, this linoleum has one drawback - the use of synthetic resins in the process of its production.
The natural version of linoleum is environmentally friendly to human health. It is resistant to wear, deformation and abrasion. For the manufacture of modern natural linoleum, linseed oil, resin, jute fabric and natural-based dyes are used. To ensure the protection of linoleum, a polymer coating is applied to it.
Due to the presence of linseed oil in its composition, linoleum is characterized by bactericidal characteristics, in addition, such linoleum is characterized by a high level of fire safety. It is easy to clean, does not change color under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. This linoleum is not used in places with increased operational load or in rooms with a high level of moisture.
The technology of laying linoleum on plywood: preparatory work
Flooring plywood on a wooden base is carried out with the aim of its full alignment. If this is not done and the linoleum is laid on an uneven floor, then soon it will take its shape and will also become uneven. As a result, an aesthetically not attractive coating is obtained.
Even if the wooden floor is even, it can creak, and laying plywood on it will help to avoid this unpleasant process. Before starting work, you should determine the place where the logs are installed, if any. To do this, one board is torn off the floor. Then, with the help of long screws, scrolling of the floor begins. Note that none of the boards should hang out. Self-tapping screws should be so long as to ensure a snug fit on each board. The distance between the concrete floor and the self-tapping screws should be at least ten centimeters. To fill the slots, wooden wedges or mounting foam are used.
The most popular material for leveling the floor for laying linoleum is birch plywood. For its manufacture using veneer layers glued together. This material is notable for its affordable cost and good environmental performance. In order to level the floor with plywood, choose a material with a thickness of about one centimeter. The price of a material depends on its thickness and the wood used in the manufacturing process.
After checking and preparing the subfloor, the process of laying plywood follows. If plywood is laid on top of a concrete screed, it is recommended that it be pre-waterproofed with a plastic film.
Plywood is laid on the floor both on the logs and without them. Before starting work, plywood should be cut into sheets that are convenient for fixing on the floor. Large sheets are most conveniently cut into four parts. Leave small gaps between the sheets to compensate for their thermal expansion. In addition, a gap of 1-1.5 cm is also left between the wall and plywood. Fix the plywood in a checkerboard pattern, after laying it, treat the floor with a primer or primer. Using the rule, check the base for evenness.
How to lay linoleum on plywood: methods for laying linoleum
There are two options for laying linoleum on plywood:
1. Glueless installation of linoleum - after preparing the plywood base, the process of linoleum flooring follows. If the area of the premises is from twelve to fifteen square meters, then this method of installation is the most optimal and suitable.
However, if the room has an increased cross-country ability, it is still recommended to use the second method. If linoleum is laid in a large room using the glueless method, then over time, there is a risk of its deformation and swelling. In order to lay linoleum on the base with plywood efficiently and with maximum evenness, perform a series of actions:
- after buying linoleum, leave it in the room for at least a day to acclimatize it,
- roll the roll in another room, the area of which is larger than that in which it will be stacked,
- in relation to room measurements, cut a linoleum fragment for laying, leave a margin of 50-100 mm on each side,
- roll out the cut out fragment in the room so that its supply extends outward from the walls evenly from all sides,
- starting from the central part of the room, smooth the linoleum moving to the edges,
- using a sharp clerical knife, cut off the excess linoleum, retreating one centimeter from the wall,
- to fix linoleum on the floor, use the baseboard, and on the threshold set the steel rail in the form of a nut.
2. The second option for laying linoleum will tell you how to glue linoleum to plywood, since it involves gluing linoleum on the floor surface.
At the beginning of the work, linoleum is also cut in relation to the parameters of the room. For these purposes, use a sharp knife. Lay linoleum canvases on the floor, check their compliance with the shape of the room.
Fold half of linoleum, grease it with glue. To apply glue, use a special grater or a toothy spatula. Then wait as much time as indicated in the instructions for the adhesive that is applied to the linoleum, lay the linoleum on the floor, carefully leveling it. Watch for the absence of air bubbles on the glued linoleum sheet. Do the same with the second half of linoleum, if you plan to mount several linoleum canvases in the room, then they are lapped off, and then they are cut with a knife and welded using the hot or cold welding method and special equipment.
Tip: When choosing an adhesive composition for laying linoleum on a plywood base, do not dwell on PVA glue or compounds that have a water base. Since during the operation of linoleum, there is a risk of settling of plywood and swelling of the material. It is better to give preference to formulations intended for wooden surfaces.
Another option for gluing linoleum to the surface is the use of double-sided tape. Among the advantages of this installation method, it should be noted:
- ease of implementation
- ease and low cost of work,
- such linoleum is easier to remove than glued with glue,
- reliable fixation of the coating.
Double-sided tape is glued to the floor from plywood, around the perimeter of the entire room. In addition, adhesive tape must also be glued at the butt sections.
Recommendations for laying linoleum on a plywood base
1. Before starting work, linoleum should be in the room for at least a day, and preferably two, so it will get used to the temperature and humidity conditions of the room.
2.Particular care should be taken in the process of laying linoleum near batteries, doorways and niches, it should be adjacent to them closely.
3. After laying linoleum, if possible leave it for one, two days, and only after the expiration of the specified period, begin to operate it.
4. When cutting linoleum in areas near the walls, leave a little margin, since linoleum after laying gives a slight shrinkage.
5. To fix linoleum near the doorway, use double-sided tape.
6. Before trimming linoleum, turn it inside out and twist it into a roll.
7. In order to join together two sheets of linoleum, there are two ways:
- cold welding method - install sheets with an overlap and use a knife to cut linoleum at the junction, attention - use only a sharp knife, since you need to cut two linoleum sheets at once, then apply double-sided tape under the sheets of linoleum, fixing them on it, apply to the surface material in the form of liquid glue, it will connect the ends to each other,
- using hot welding, a building hair dryer is used, which heats up a special cord, which is immediately laid at the junction and smoothed out with a special ironer.
The advantages of plywood over other materials
You can create a suitable base for linoleum by installing a subfloor using materials such as plywood, OSB, particleboard, fiberboard sheets:
- Consider the option of plywood. It is made from veneered sheets glued together with the help of certain resins. Veneer is strips of natural wood of various species of small thickness 1-10 mm. It is collected perpendicular to the direction of the fibers in sheets of certain sizes, most often 2.44 x 1.22 m. The thickness of the sheets depends on the thickness of the veneer used and the number of layers, at least three layers. It happens from 3 to 30 millimeters. It differs in grade, moisture resistance and quality of finish.
Plywood is a lightweight, environmentally friendly material, has sufficient strength, but is easily sawn with a jigsaw.
- There are other options. Using fiberboard sheets, A worn wooden floor can be leveled only if there are no large flaws. They are subtle and all defects become visible over time. In addition, when moisture enters the fiberboard, bubbles form, and when dried, the sheets do not restore their shape. Chipboard sheets from moisture are destroyed, turning into dust, may contain harmful toxic substances.
- Domestic OSB plates have synthetic additives necessary to improve strength and moisture resistance. Environmentally friendly and moisture-proof chipboard analogs for flooring are too expensive, as is the Canadian version of OSB board. For flooring, the OSB panel of the third category and the plywood of the FSF construction mark will be optimal. And from the environmental and financial side - plywood brand FBA and FC.
The subtleties of laying linoleum on plywood
Linoleum is an elastic material that exhibits all base defects. It can be laid both on a concrete floor and on a wooden one. To preserve the appearance and increase the service life, the surface should strive for perfect, be strong and even. When it is necessary to insulate or level the floor, as one of the options, plywood is used:
- If we have a concrete base, then it is enough to visually check the condition of the floor. It should be even and clean. Drops of mortar on the screed after repair are knocked down or polished, it is even possible with a brick. They beat off with a laser, water or a simple level perimeter marks. Using a tape measure check the plane. If the difference is more than 3-4 cm - level the floor with a screed.
The same is done when the floor is made of reinforced concrete slabs.
- Then follows waterproofing process. There are several types of it. But in this case, it is enough to put the roofing material, gluing the sheets together with mastic, or the euroruberoid, welding with a blowtorch. The easiest way is to lay a thick plastic film, fastening it together with tape.
- Plywood is laid on top., the sheets of which are cut into four parts. They do this because the whole sheet is subject to greater deformation due to temperature changes. For the same reasons, a distance of one centimeter is left between the wall and plywood, and three to four millimeters between the pieces themselves. First, plywood is drilled with a drill of 2-3 mm.
- Next step lay out the sheets on the floor and chart on the basis of the location of the fastener. Then they remove the plywood and drill holes under the dowels with a 6 mm drill using a puncher. The sheets are fastened to the base in a checkerboard pattern on 5x60 mm dowels. Hats are drowning. Plywood can be put on a frame of boards with a thickness of one centimeter. It is assembled in the form of square honeycombs with a step of 30-60 cm. It is attached to the floor with the same dowels, and with each other with self-tapping screws. Honeycombs can be filled with insulation. Joints of plywood sheets are placed on the frame in a checkerboard pattern and fastened with nails or self-tapping screws. There should not be more than two seams at the joints. As fasteners, you can use parquet mastic or liquid nails.
- If indoors wooden floor, it is also subjected to visual and technical inspection. Damp and rotten boards are dismantled. In the presence of mold or mildew, a possible cause of the deficiency is determined. Eliminate it, and the place of damage is treated with antifungal agents. Loose and creaking boards are nailed or drawn to the lags with self-tapping screws. The length of the screws should not exceed the width of the lag, so as not to abut the concrete. When the logs themselves bend, the floor is completely sorted out. To do this, dismantle the flooring and strengthen the logs or, if necessary, replace them with new ones.
They are fastened to the wall using brackets, and then they are screwed to the concrete in level with anchor bolts, using linings (for example, from fiberboard) or wedges. Then collect the floor back.
- Old paint must be removed from the boards., warming it with a building hairdryer and scraping with a spatula. Curved boards are chipped with a plane. For large cracks, special rails are prepared, hammered and polished. Small slots propenyut or fill with mastic, putty. On the prepared floor, you can glue plywood or screw it with screws.
- The distance between the fasteners should be at least 15 cm. When the floor is outwardly quite poor, but strong, then the wooden frame is assembled in the same way as in the case of the concrete floor. It must be remembered that when installing plywood and linoleum on a wooden floor, it is necessary to leave a ventilation hole that prevents condensation from accumulating in the subfloor. It is covered at the end of the work with a decorative element.
Which is better to lay on?
As a rule, two types of plywood are used for flooring:
- FC construction plywood, the veneer of which is glued with urea resin,
- FKM plywood made on the basis of melamine resins.
These are the most environmentally friendly options for medium moisture resistance. The higher the moisture resistance, the more harmful chemistry they contain. Plywood can be of four grades A, B, C and D. Since the external beauty will be hidden by linoleum, there is no need to spend money on it.
But when using low-quality varieties, problems may arise that will have to be further corrected.
For unpolished (NS) plywood, when using glue as a means for fastening, its consumption increases. Ш2 (polished on both sides) for the floor is a little expensive, and Sh1 (polished on one side) is what you need. Plywood before installation must be dried indoors for several days in an upright position. To increase the density, you can apply several layers of furniture varnish or soak it with an antiseptic. The thickness of the sheets should be from 8 mm and more. If necessary, you can put two layers, if the height from floor to ceiling allows you to do this without a big loss of free space.
When laying plywood on logs, it is better to take 18 mm.
Training
Linoleum needs to be spread in a free room of a larger area a few days before installation, for its alignment. If this is not possible, then it is necessary to do the preparation of the floor first:
- Using a spatula, the joints between the plates are puttied with special putty on wood.
- After it dries (the drying time is indicated on the packaging by the manufacturer), it is wiped with fine emery paper or a mask. It is impossible to use mortars on a cement or gypsum base for puttying a plywood floor, because they crack.
- It is not necessary to cover the entire surface with a solution, as is done for a ceiling or walls.
- After that, garbage is thoroughly cleaned using a vacuum cleaner.
- And last but not least, you can soak the plywood with hot linseed oil or a special primer on wood.
- All work is carried out in a room with an air temperature not lower than 18 degrees and a humidity not higher than 50-80%. After that, garbage is carefully cleaned, linoleum is brought in, deployed around the perimeter and given time to lie down.
How to put?
The simple technology of laying linoleum on a substrate allows you to easily cope with this work:
- The recovered (straightened) linoleum is brought into the room and laid on a pre-prepared floor.
- Level the surface from the center to the edges, allowing the material to be correctly distributed around the perimeter of the room.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the edges along the walls, given that there may be shrinkage in some types of linoleum. Trimming under the door frames is carried out especially carefully, since the edges are not covered by anything. Technical holes are cut to bypass pipes or other obstructions.
- Plinths are mounted. If there is no threshold in the doorway, then special sills made of soft metal are mounted at the end of the coating, which can be purchased in advance, along with linoleum.
Preparatory stage
Due to the fact that old boards, as a rule, are in very poor condition, have cracks, creak or go up and down, it is imperative to lay a new base on the boards before laying linoleum on plywood. Thanks to this, you will get rid of squeaks by 90% for many years. If this is not done, linoleum in a short time will become wavy and reflect on itself the entire uneven relief of the old floor.
Before putting linoleum on plywood, the first thing to do is find the location of all the lags under the boards. This can be done by lifting one board or simply searching for them through the wall slot. To do this, remove the wall plinth.
After this, all available boards should be screwed to the lags for their full fixation. For this, long self-tapping screws are suitable. It is important that the screws are not short, and at the same time not too long so as not to touch the concrete floors. Therefore, before this process, you should determine the distance, as a rule, it is about 10 cm.
If large gaps have formed between the boards over a long period of time, wedges from the tree must be hammered into them and glued to prevent possible squeaks in the future. In some cases, the technology of laying linoleum on plywood implies additional screwing of the lag to the concrete base.
If wind blows from the street wall near the floor, often this concerns prefabricated houses, you will need to blow out these cracks with mounting foam.
Leveling material selection
At the moment, the following alternative materials for leveling the floor can be found on the market:
- OSB plates - they are compacted wooden chips of small sizes, glued together with various resins, artificial wax and boric acid. In Russia, they are usually made from aspen. Initially, it was assumed that OSB sheets would be a cheap alternative to plywood, but over time, plywood also fell in price.
- Chipboard - for manufacturing small chips with hot pressing are used. It is not worth using this material in the house to level the floor, because the connecting components in the plates emit formaldehydes, which are harmful to health.
- Fiberboard - flexible fiberboard. Unsuitable material to eliminate unevenness of the floor due to its flexibility, so they try to apply it only for even reasons. The positive qualities of the material include its environmental friendliness due to the lack of binding components in it (read also: "Fiberboard for the floor - types and sequence of laying").
- CSP - composite sheet building material, the manufacture of which uses thin wood shavings, Portland cement and special chemical additives to minimize the negative effects of wood on cement. Very strong and at the same time heavy material, but, because of its fragility, it is advisable to lay it only on a more or less even base, otherwise the sheet may break off.
However, birch plywood is most often used to correct uneven floors. Do it by gluing several thin layers of veneer. Such material gained popularity due to its cheapness and good environmental friendliness (read: "Plywood for linoleum as the basis for wooden and concrete floors").
The minimum sheet thickness should be from 6 mm, but it is better not to save and take from 10 mm. The price of one sheet starts from 240 rubles for 1.5 x 1.5 m and depends on the grade and thickness.
Floor Leveling Steps
Before laying linoleum on plywood, as many irregularities on the floor as possible should be eliminated. The protrusions can be eliminated with a planer, and significant cavities can be covered with putty on wood. Plywood bends well, so after screwing it takes the form of a floor surface with all the flaws.
Next, you need to thoroughly clean the floor, determine the location of the sheets and lay the plywood for a couple of days so that it is matured.
For fastening plywood sheets, small self-tapping screws, 3-4 cm long, will be needed, they need to be screwed in every 15 cm. If the gap is increased, then the sheet may rise over time in different places, which will lead to bending while walking and creaking (for more details: "How to put plywood on the floor - laying rules ").
A clearance of 1 cm should be left against the wall so that in the future, in the event of a microclimate change in the room, after the linoleum flooring on the plywood is completed, bubbles and creaks do not begin to form. There is no need to make a gap between the sheets.
It is recommended to lay an additional layer of plywood with an offset if the wooden surface has large irregularities or elevations.
All hats of self-tapping screws must be screwed deeper than flush so that they can then be puttied together with the rest of the recesses.
The sequence of laying linoleum
Before laying linoleum on plywood, it should be left in the room for several days. To do this, it should be decomposed so that it is most tightly in contact with one of the room corners. If an excess length of any edges is observed, at this stage it is normal, later all excess can be cut off (for more details: "How to lay linoleum - laying rules").
After that, you should trim the remaining corners to fit the size of the room. To do this, bend the sheet and place marks on the back of the linoleum.
Putting marks, step by step, we cut the linoleum, where necessary. For cutting, ordinary scissors are suitable. You can use ready-made markings on the wrong side, it is applied by some manufacturers, sometimes it helps a lot. But it is useful only if the walls are even and they run parallel to the lines, otherwise you can ruin a whole roll of linoleum.
You need to trim the linoleum carefully, preferably in small pieces, in stages. If there are pipes in the places of laying, then an incision is made from the edge of the sheet to the beginning of the pipe, and then a circle of the desired diameter is cut.
Gluing
In order to understand how to properly lay linoleum on plywood, you need to know that if the room is large, you will have to combine a drawing of two rolls. It will take glue and cold or hot welding to join. Everything is much simpler, if the room is small, then you only need to glue the linoleum to the plywood and fix it against the walls with a plinth (for more details: "How to glue linoleum to plywood and how to do it").
Glue to cover the floor from the junction of linoleum, then put linoleum and smooth it with a ironer or a special roller until all air bubbles from under the linoleum have left.
After that, you can glue the remaining floor surface under the second piece of linoleum with glue, after which it can be laid with a slight overlap on the previous piece.
In order for the seam to come out even, you need to cut two layers of linoleum along the ruler at once in the middle of the overlap. The waste is removed, and the joint is additionally glued and pressed.
Next, a masking tape is glued to the joint along the entire length to protect the pattern and coating from the effects of cold welding. Its special composition after contact with the polymer softens it, so that the joints are glued together.
Cold welding is preferable due to the fact that you do not need to use a special tool. Better when the tube is equipped with a needle nozzle.
Cut the masking tape at the junction and fill it along the entire length with a mixture of cold welding. After a while, the seam will dry out and the two sheets of linoleum will become one.
The final stage of the process, how to properly put linoleum on plywood with your own hands, will be the installation of a wall plinth, decorative linings on pipes and a nut near the door frame.
